Bring bold, golden color to your landscape just when many flowers are fading. Helenium autumnale, commonly called Sneezeweed, is a native wildflower that lights up the garden in late summer and fall with bright yellow, daisy-like blooms and adorable ball-shaped centers. Growing 2–5 feet tall, this sturdy perennial forms upright clumps of leafy stems topped with loads of flowers. Each bloom has fan-shaped yellow petals (often with three cute "teeth" at the tips) that gracefully droop from a raised, button-like greenish-yellow center. It’s a butterfly and bee magnet—and it thrives in the spots where many plants struggle, like damp or heavy soils. Despite the name, Sneezeweed won’t trigger allergies. The name comes from a historic use: dried leaves were once used in snuff to induce sneezing and supposedly ward off evil spirits (don’t try that at home). Gardeners today love it for its charm, toughness, and ability to add life to borders, native plantings, and rain gardens. Plant it, water it, and watch it bloom when your garden needs a second wind.
