Blue Star Juniper (Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star') is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its sparkling silver-blue foliage and dense, mounded form. Its slow-growing, low-profile habit makes it ideal for rock gardens, borders, and mass plantings in minimal-care landscapes. The foliage maintains its vibrant color year-round, providing consistent visual interest.
Light: Thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and color.
Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires watering only during prolonged dry periods.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and can adapt to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils. Avoid poorly drained or soggy conditions, which can lead to root rot.
Growth Rate & Size: Slow-growing, eventually reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a rounded, spreading mound.
Foliage & Fall Color: Features dense, silver-blue needle-like foliage that holds its color year-round. In colder climates, the foliage may take on a purplish hue during winter months.
Maintenance: Low maintenance. Pruning is rarely necessary but can be done to maintain shape. Generally pest- and disease-resistant, though it may be susceptible to spider mites in hot, humid conditions.
