Boxwood ‘Green Velvet’ is a compact, evergreen shrub valued for its dense, rounded form and bright green foliagethat holds its color throughout the year. A hybrid between English and Korean boxwood, it combines the best traits of both: excellent winter hardiness and a refined appearance. It’s ideal for low hedges, foundation plantings, borders, or container use, and responds well to shaping and shearing.
Light: Thrives in full sun to part shade. In hotter regions, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
Water: Water regularly, especially during dry spells. Prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering or allowing soil to become soggy.
Soil: Adaptable to a variety of soils but performs best in well-drained, loamy soil with moderate acidity. Mulch to protect shallow roots and retain moisture.
Growth Rate & Size: Slow to moderate growth, maturing at about 2–3 feet tall and wide with a naturally rounded habit, maintaining its shape with minimal pruning.
Foliage & Fall Color: Features glossy, medium green foliage year-round. It holds its color through winter better than many other boxwood varieties, with minimal bronzing in cold climates.
Maintenance: Low maintenance. Tolerates pruning and shaping very well—best done in late spring after new growth flushes. Avoid shearing in fall, as new cuts may not harden off before winter.
