Fat Albert Blue Spruce (Picea pungens 'Fat Albert') is a dense, slow-growing evergreen with a naturally pyramidal shape and striking blue-silver needles. Its strong central leader and full, symmetrical form make it a bold focal point in the landscape. With excellent year-round color and minimal pruning needs, it’s ideal for specimen planting, windbreaks, or as a living Christmas tree.
Light: Thrives in full sun, requiring 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day for best needle color and overall health.
Water: Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but is adaptable to a range of soil types including clay and sandy soils. Avoid locations with standing water.
Growth Rate & Size: Slow to moderate growth, eventually reaching 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide over many years. Maintains a compact, pyramidal form without pruning.
Foliage & Fall Color: Dense branches are covered with silvery-blue needles that retain their color all year long. As an evergreen, it provides reliable structure and color through all seasons.
Maintenance: Very low maintenance. Rarely needs pruning due to its naturally tidy form. Deer-resistant and tolerant of urban pollution.
